Mooseheads’ Draft Could Be Exciting

We ‘re just two days away from the QMJHL Draft. Each team will be looking to reload their roster with young talent.

This year makes it is especially intirguing for the Halifax Mooseheads who hold the first overall pick. The Moose have fallen to the bottom of the league rankings after years competing for the league title and of course the Memorial Cup Championship in 2013. Along with the first overall pick, Halifax has a number of picks early in this draft, which could prove pivotal in vaulting them back into the upper echelon of not only the Q, but the CHL.

The consensus #1 pick appears to be Benoit-Olivier Groulx. A storng centremen with offensive talent, but also plays well away from the puck and defensively (more). Usually player comparisons are tough when dealing with prospects because you are not so much saying they will achieve to the same level, but they have the same style, but often that gets confused. I asked about player comparisons for Groulx and Jonathan Toews was the comparable. I’m sure there is at least a little bit of temptation on the part of Halifax to select local standout defensemen Jared McIsaac, but when you have a chance to grab a #1 centerman, you shouldn’t balk. What’s interesting is I still think there is a chance McIsaac is a Moosehead after this weekend.

Crosby & MacKinnon to Faceoff in World Cup

Wednesday marked the announcement of the first 16 roster players for each of the eight teams competing for the World Cup of Hockey in September on this year. As with any announcement of this nature there is bound to be debate as to who was included and who was omitted. What is not up for debate, is that the two Nova Scotians named deserved their spots. Oddly enough on different teams.

The Sportster’s Xmas List

Christmas is right around the corner and many people are still trying to find that right present for that special someone on their list. That special someone on your list may be into sports and stuff like I am. Now as a grown man, it is amazing how little my Christmas list has changed since I was a kid. Just more boozy, I guess.

Erne, Ehlers and Richard are the Q 3 Stars of the Week

Adam Erne, Nikolaj Ehlers and Anthony Richard were named today, the three stars of the week for November 17 to 23, 2014.

The first star of the week is the Quebec Remparts’ forward, Adam Erne. The Tampa Bay Lightning prospect completed the week with 2 goals, 6 assists, a +5 rating and won 75% of his face-offs. Friday against the Sherbrooke Phoenix, Erne scored 2 goals and assisted on Kurt Etchegary’s game winning goal. Erne was named the first star in the Remparts’ 4-2 win. He tallied 2 more points in a 6-4 loss against the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies on Saturday. The Remparts won 6-2 against the Baie-Comeau Drakkar, and Erne ended the week with 3 more assists including one on Timashov’s game winning goal. He now has 38 points in 21 games for a 1.81 points per game average.

It’s Hockey Night in Cole Harbour!

While there’s isn’t any high profile game actually in the Nova Scotia community Monday night, two of it’s native sons and most prominent residents will face off against one another for the first time when Nathan MacKinnon and the Colorado Avalanche visit Sidney Crosby and his Pittsburgh Penguins.
