Dartmouth Inches Closer to NSSBL Title

Logo for Baseball Nova ScotiaVeteran Jason Bailey just keeps on doing it for the Dartmouth Moosehead Dry. In the fifth game of the NSSBL finals Thursday night at Beazly Field, Bailey allowed just one run on three hits while striking out 11 on the way to the complete game victory.

To show he still had lots left in the tank, Bailey struck out the side in the nineth.

Dartmouth got all the runs they needed in the third. Dan Comeau and Chris Gallivan had back to back singles before Chris Head sacrificed the pair to second and third. After a Matt Thomas groundout, Joel Irvine hit a ground ball to SS Ryan Veinot that went through his legs allowing Comeau and Gallivan to score.

Bailey Returns to Dartmouth Moosehead Dry

logo of the Dartmouth Moosehead DryDespite a two game losing streak, The Dartmouth Moosehead Dry players are the happiest bunch of ball players outside of Arizona today. The Moosehead Dry all-time pitching leader and considered by many to be the best amateur pitcher in the country over the past 10 years, lefty Jason Bailey, is returning to the club for the remainder of the season.

Bailey retired from the NSSBL with the intention to focus on his touch football career, but his competitive desire and the lure seeking a gold medal at the Canadian Senior Baseball Championship in Chatham, N.B., Aug. 25-28 convinced him to come back.

He will be in the line-up tomorrow night when the Dry travel to Truro. He will play in the outfield and take time to throw with back-up catcher, Jordan Oakey, to get back in pitching shape. His first start is likely to take place in the last week of July.

Bailey was 5-2 last season and led the league in strikeouts with 85 and posted an ERA of 2.40, third best in the league.

Mark Pelham Wins NSSBL Player of the Week

Cleve's Source for Sports logoMark Pelham of the Halifax Pelham Molson Canadians has been chosen this week’s Cleve’s Source for Sports Player of the Week in the Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League. One of the co-coaches of the Canadians, Pelham had an outstanding week in helping his team win games over the Truro Bearcats and their league leading rivals, the Dartmouth Moosehead Dry.

Pelham had seven hits in 11 at bats for an average of .636, including adding two more doubles to his league leading total. All that was enroute to three RBIs.

The Pelham Molson Canadians had been struggling a bit offensively of late. Both the team and Pelham seemed to benefit from a change in the lineup which saw Scott Willgress move out of the lead off spot in favour of Ryan Veinot, and Pelham move into the to hole.

Others considered for the award were Ryan Veinot of the Canadians, Guy Pellerine of Truro, Justin Brewer of the Sydney Sooners, Kevin Nichols of the Kentville Wildcats, and Chris Head of the Dry.

Langille Wins NSSBL Player of the Week

Cleve's Source for Sports logoThe Dartmouth Moosehead Dry’s right-hander Craig Langille has been selected as the Cleve’s Source for Sports Player of the Week in the NSSBL.

The former Milwaukee Brewers’ 7th round pick in 2004 won both his starts this past week. The Dry moved to 12-1 record on the season and ran their undefeated streak to 12 straight.

Langille won his start last Tuesday against the Halifax Pelham Molson Canadians throwing 5 innings and giving up just one run on six hits. On Saturday he allowed just four hits over seven innings in a 14-1 rout of the Sydney Sooners. With the two victories, Langille holds a league best 5-0 record.

Due to injuries, Langille was not only asked to contribute on the mound, but also at the plate during the double header against the Sooners. Taking advantage of a rare opportunity to contribute offensively, he went 2 for 2 and drove in the game-winning run in the eleventh inning of the Dry’s 8-6 victory in the first game.

Also considered for the honour were pitcher Kevin Nichols of the Kentville Wildcats, the Dry’s 17 year old hurler, Anthony McKinley, the Dry’s Colin Johnson, and the Sooners’ Jason Snow.
