Senior Baseball Finals Set
Okay, it’s been too long. I get it. I admittedly took a summer hiatus, but I can of no better reason to get back on the blog than with the Nova Scotia Senior League Finals about to get underway.
The first round of the Senior League finished up with the Dartmouth Moosehead Dry sweeping the Halifax Pelham Canadians 3-0 in the best-of-five series while the Kentville Wildcats dispatched the Sydney Sooners 3-1 in the other series.
The Dry and Wildcats will kick-off the finals in Kentville Friday, September 14th @ 7:30 with Game 2 back in Dartmouth Saturday evening at 7:00. Kentville took the regular season series 5-2 over Dartmouth, but that could be decpetive. Five of the seven games were decided by only one run.

Haverstock NSSBL Player of the Week
Veteran right-hander Mark Haverstock has been chosen as the Cleve’s Source for Sports Player of the Week in the NSSBL.
Haverstock was the main reason for the Halifax Pelham Molson Canadians picking up two victories in their 3-game series with the Sydney Sooners this past weekend in Sydney. He threw a complete game, 5-hit shutout on Friday evening and then quieted the Sooners’ bats after an eight-run outburst in the seventh inning of the second game, pitching the last two innings. Halifax scored two runs in the nineth to claim a 15-14 win and give Haversotck two dubs in as many days.
With the two victories Haverstock joins Dartmouth Moosehead Dry’s Craig Langille atop the wins column in the league with seven.
Others considered for the award were the Sooners’ Cory Christie and Justin Brewer, the Canadians’ Mark Pelham, Kentville’s Kevin Matheson, and Truro’s Darson Murphy.
Shrider is NSSBL Player of the Week
Dartmouth native Codey Shrider has made quite an impression in his first season in the Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League and is this week’s winner of the Cleve’s Source for Sports Player of the Week Award. Shrider, who will be returning to Allan Hancock Community College in Santa Maria, CA, for his sophomore year, played a big role in the Kentville Wildcats’ three-game sweep of the Sydney Sooners.
Shrider came on in relief in the eighth inning of the first game of the series to get a save in the Wildcats’ 11-10 win. He then scattered nine hits in a complete game victory on Saturday in a 6-5 victory. He also had a double and a single in the game to help his own cause.
Other players considered for the award were the Sooners’ Derrick Aucoin, Halifax’s Adam Lucas, and the Dry’s Chris Head.
Sheppard Shipped to Sharks
Nova Scotia’s own James Sheppard will find himself with a new organization when he returns to hockey. Sheppard has not played for the Minnesota Wild since suffering a knee injury in an incident with all-terrain vehicle. A change of scenery may be a blessing for Sheppard who has not lived up to his ninth overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. I believe there may have also been some hard feelings following the accident that led to the current injury.
via The Star Tribune
Sheppard, 24, was suspended all of last season after breaking his left kneecap in an all-terrain vehicle accident. Sheppard, a restricted free agent drafted ninth overall in 2006, had his qualifying offer expire when he didn’t sign a new contract by the July 15 deadline.
However, it’s believed the trade was on hold because just before that Sheppard underwent a second operation on his knee. Sheppard is not expected to be ready in time for training camp.
…
Sheppard, who was rushed to the NHL from Cape Breton at age 19, scored 11 goals and 49 points in 224 games for the Wild. Of the seven players taken in 2006 by the Wild, only Cal Clutterbuck and Kyle Medvec are still in the system.
